unicorn archetrope flag

[originally posted on tumblr on 01-05-2025] an archetrope flag. it features rays of color eminating from the center-top of the field, with the archetrope symbol in the middle. the colors are, starting from the center to the sides: white, grey, black, light green, green, dark green and dark red. the symbol, a cicle with two seeds and roots under them, is gold in color.

i was inspired by some mutuals making flags for their own archetropes. im by no means a graphic designer, but i did my best to make a flag to represent my arche-unicorn. color meanings and symbolisms under the cut.

white - represents purity, the central aspect of the unicorn archetype. you’ll notice that this isn’t a perfect white, rather an off-white, somewhat creamy, color. this was intentional, as i wanted to represent that nothing is 100% pure in nature; The Unicorn is, after all, nature itself. it is also a nod to the unicorn’s iconic white coat.

grey - between black and white, the color grey is the equilibrium between two words. pure and corrupt, natural and artificial, light and dark, good and bad. nature is complex and multifaceted, an infinity of shades of grey that are constantly changing.

black - The Unicorn is a force of good, but there is no good without evil: all things must have a balance. i decided to include a black stripe to represent the contrast, the darkness within the light. not one can exist without the other. it is also a nod to medieval tapestry depictions of black-coated unicorns.

green - represents nature in all its shades. nature is beautiful, but also ugly. it is gentle, but also cruel. it is life, but also death. nature can mean many things for many people, thats why there are multiple shades of it.

red - red for blood, this color represents a lot of things. it is a reference to purity of blood, the myth that only virgin women could be able to tame a unicorn because their blood was inherently “purer” than other’s. it also references the fierce unicorn described by Pliny the Elder (which now we know was probably just a rhinoceros), a powerful beast capable of killing men with its horn. it represents the healing abilities of the unicorn, who is said to be able to cure any affliction with its horn, blood or tears, depending of the story. finally, it is also a nod to medieval tapestry depictions of red-coated unicorns.

gold - in alchemy, gold symbolizes perfection and purity. it also represents transformation, both physical and spiritual. i think this is a good symbol for archetropy in general; embracing an archetrope means to change, even if just a little.
